About the Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, and its station at 3,454 metres is the highest railway station in Europe. Construction began on 27 July 1896, and since 1912 the Jungfrau Railway has carried passengers through the mountain from Eigergletscher, a 26-minute ride. Above the station the Sphinx Observatory looks down the longest glacier in the Alps. Things to Do at the Top

The station opens onto a circuit you can walk in two to three hours: the Sphinx terrace at 3,571 m, the Ice Palace cut into the glacier, the Plateau out in the snow and the Alpine Sensation corridor. In summer the Snow Fun Park adds a zipline and sledging, and the Lindt shop sells chocolate at the top.

Routes Up the Mountain

Two routes lead up, and both end on the Jungfrau Railway. One climbs by the Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald Terminal; the other rides the cogwheel line from Lauterbrunnen through Kleine Scheidegg. Most guided days go up one way and come down the other, so you see both valleys in a day.

Planning Your Visit

At 3,454 m the air is thin and the snow never leaves, so dress in layers, bring sunglasses and drink water through the day. The railway advises against the trip for babies under two and late in pregnancy. Plan your start town, your ticket and the weather before you choose a date.

Every way up starts at Interlaken Ost. Direct trains reach it from Zurich main station in 1 hour 57 minutes and from Lucerne in 1 hour 48, and from Interlaken Ost the railway's own timetable puts you on the Jungfraujoch 1 hour 30 minutes later by the Eiger Express. The last stretch, the Jungfrau Railway from Eigergletscher, takes 26 minutes.

How to get there

Jungfraujoch tickets start from CHF 129.60 with Jungfrau Railways, and the fare depends on where you board and which discount cards you hold. From 1 May to 31 October 2026 a Jungfraujoch reservation is mandatory: the seat costs CHF 10, and children up to 5 travel free. For Jungfraujoch ticket prices from every station, and for Jungfraujoch booking with a pass, compare the fares before you buy Jungfraujoch tours and tickets together.

The Good Morning Ticket takes 20% off the first two trains of the day, from 1 May to 31 October 2026. They leave Interlaken Ost at 07:04 and 07:34, and the discount holds if you come down from the top by 13:17. It cannot be combined with other discounts, so compare it against your pass first.

MeteoSwiss measures 0.6°C as the August mean on the Jungfraujoch, the warmest month, and -13.3°C in February, with about 1,773 hours of sunshine a year. There is snow at the top in every month, so pack a warm layer, gloves and sunglasses even in summer.

Do You Need a Tour to Reach the Jungfraujoch?

Not to ride up. Jungfrau Railways sells the Jungfraujoch ticket itself, at the station counters and online, and the return from Interlaken Ost is also bookable here at $327. A Swiss Travel Pass carries you free as far as Grindelwald or Wengen and brings a discount above them, and a Half Fare Card is valid on the whole network. Neither makes the top free, and the Jungfrau Travel Pass buys only a reduced connecting ticket for the last stretch.

A tour earns its fare in three places: the coach from Zurich, Lucerne or Geneva with every change planned, a guide who stays with you at the top, and a reserved seat on the busiest trains. If you are already in Interlaken and happy to follow the changes yourself, the railway's own ticket does the job.

How a Day at the Jungfraujoch Runs

Choose where you start

Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern, Geneva or Grindelwald: the card says how long the day runs from there.

Meet the coach or train

Coach days meet at a named stop in the city; the private days collect you at your hotel.

Up by gondola and rail

The Eiger Express climbs from Grindelwald Terminal, or the cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen, and the Jungfrau Railway finishes the climb.

Two to three hours at the top

The Sphinx terrace, the Ice Palace and the Plateau, with a guide or on your own, as your card states.

Down another way

How much does a Jungfraujoch tour cost?

Guided group days from Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken run from $313 to $356 per person with the mountain railway in the fare. Private days start around $919 per person at the smallest group size, and helicopter flights are priced per aircraft from $1,433.

Is the railway ticket included in the tour price?

On every guided group day and private day here, yes. The exception is the Grindelwald guide day, which includes a seat reservation only; its listing prices the ticket at CHF 261.20 per person at full fare, so check your total before you book.

How long do you get at the top?

Best of Switzerland guarantees at least 2 hours, and Gray Line allows about 3. Jungfrau Railways' own ticket books your return train 3 hours after you arrive. The Keytours coach days give about 1.5 hours, plus time at the Sphinx and the Ice Palace.

Does a guide come up to the summit with you?

On the Best of Switzerland and Gray Line days, yes. On the Keytours coach days from Zurich and Geneva the guide rides the coach and the summit visit is self-guided. The railway's own ticket is unguided, so you find your own way up and around.

How high is the Jungfraujoch?

The station stands at 3,454 metres, the highest railway station in Europe. The Sphinx Observatory above it, reached by lift from the station, is higher still at 3,571 metres.

Do you need a seat reservation for the train up?

Yes, from 1 May to 31 October 2026, for the train between Eigergletscher and the Jungfraujoch. It costs CHF 10. Every guided day here includes it, and the Grindelwald guide day includes the reservation but not the ticket.

Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the Jungfraujoch?

No. The Swiss Travel Pass is not a free ride to the top. Pass holders pay a reduced fare, which the railway's own fare calculator shows when you enter the pass; you still buy the ticket for the mountain section.

Does the Jungfrau Travel Pass include the Jungfraujoch?

No. The Jungfrau Travel Pass covers the region's railways, cableways and lake boats for 3 to 8 days, and gives you a discounted connecting ticket from Eigergletscher to the top, from CHF 89 between 1 May and 31 October 2026.

How do you get to the Jungfraujoch from Zurich?

By train to Interlaken Ost, about 2 hours 4 to 2 hours 15, then on to Grindelwald Terminal or Lauterbrunnen and up the mountain. Or take a coach day of 11.5 to 12 hours that includes everything, with a guide.

What should you wear at the top?

Winter clothes, in every month: a warm jacket, rubber-soled shoes and sunglasses. There is snow on the Plateau all year, and nothing to rent at the top.

Can children go up?

Yes, but the advice from Jungfrau Railways, quoted in the tour listings, is that children under 2 should not, because of pressure equalising and fluid intake. Older children go up on every tour here.

What if it's cloudy at the top?

The trains still run, and the Ice Palace and Alpine Sensation are indoors, but the view can be a whiteout. Check the summit webcam on the morning, and use the 24-hour free cancellation most tours carry if the forecast turns.

Do Jungfraujoch helicopter tours land at the top?

No. None of the helicopter flights here lands. The 42-minute flights pass the Eiger North Face and the Sphinx, while the 26-minute flight stays over Lake Thun and sees the peaks at a distance.

Can you cancel and get your money back?

Every tour here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts. The exception is the 2-day tour from Zurich, which refunds only up to 3 full days before.

Which tour is best from Interlaken?

For a first visit, the guided Best of Switzerland day: 7 hours with a guide at the top. If you would rather go at your own pace, Jungfrau Railways' own return ticket from Interlaken Ost costs about the same and gives you 3 hours up there.
